I have been to Cebu three times and it truly is inexpensive for a westerner to live there--unless you plan on eating imported foods everyday and living in luxury duplex or penthouse apartments. If you are retiring here you don't need a car either. Grab taxi like Uber is dirt cheap as well. I picked up this book several months before I planned on traveling to the Philippines. It's really a simple guide to the culture and way of life. There are a lot of things that one might take for granted living in the United States, and this book serves as a good introduction to your new experiences that await you.
This book highlights just about everything you can imagine. It even has a section where it gives you recipes for authentic Philippine cousine. A definite reccomendation for anyone seriously considering traveling to the Philippines. One person found this helpful. A necessary resource for anyone traveling to the Philippines, intending on interacting with the people there. As other reviews have stated, it is intended primarily as a business traveler or ex-pats guide.
However, there is enough detail to help any traveler. The book is well Nothing - Culture Shock (15) - Culture Shock (Vinyl) and presents the topics in short, related and relevant ways.
The book states, and rightly so, that the West is a 'goal oriented' culture, while the Philippines is a 'people oriented' culture. As such, there are many traditions and expectations. Their violation may be forgiven a first time traveler. However, there is only one chance to make a first impression. This book makes that much easier. It explains expectations in most social and business settings. The only area found lacking is the section on Dating.
If one is on business, a single ex-pat, or tourist there is an opportunity to date. The book's section on dating covers some key points in an abstract way. For example, the book explains that at some point in time one must 'meet the parents'.
But, one learns elsewhere in the book when meeting anyone for the first time, a gift is expected. Showing up at a female date's house to meet her parents without a gift is a BAD thing. Speaking of gifts. The book does mention gift giving as a cultural expectation. It also makes some suggestions as to appropriate gifts.
The gifts mentioned are for business settings with peers or superiors. Overall this book delivers a great deal of insight and information to the Philippine visitor - be it business or pleasure or both.
This book does allow one to do that. I have read about a dozen books about the Philippines in anticipation of moving there. Most of them were a waste of time, badly written and desperately in need of a spell checking and grammar correcting program. I found 2 viewpoints represented in the books. The Philippines is the best place in the world and none of the country's problems are mentioned or its a terrible, dangerous country with few redeming values. This book covers most everything.
Be warned though that its not Nothing - Culture Shock (15) - Culture Shock (Vinyl) travel book. It goes into great depth in explaining the values influencing the Filipino people, their history and what "makes them tick" in today's world. It is definitely a book that requires more than one reading and I consider it mandatory reading before and after relocating there.
I think my cultural transition will be much easier having read this book. I already understand my Filipino friends much better and I haven't moved there yet. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Translate all reviews to English. This book does just what the title suggests!
Now feeling much more prepared about what to expect when visiting the Philippines in the summer. Report abuse. Die meisten Kapitel entalten Fotos und zuweilen leicht satirische Comics. This is a very informative and highly useful book for anyone interested in learning about this fascinating country or any Filipino who wants to know more about their own country in detail, stuff that they may not know themselves about their own countrytheir traditions and customs.
Philippines Culture Shock!
Report abuse Translate review to English. I liked the book even if the chapter on te cost of living is not true. It says life in philipines is so expensive and its not. It says that a foreigner would spend something like dollars a month. This is not true. Foreigners can live comfortably with dollars a month but the rest of the info is very accurate and funny. Nice book.

With this in mind the author then approaches pertinent topics such as Human Sexuality, Homosexuality, Abortion, and Politics, Nothing - Culture Shock (15) - Culture Shock (Vinyl).
Without being "preachy" Ingram offers a traditional Christian perspective which would be helpful for anyone, even outside the religious community. I bought this book after reading his book entitled "Overcoming Emotions That Destroy," an excellent work dealing with how to manage and deal with anger. A lot of opinion and studies are frequently cited but no mention of the details of the studies I would prefer if he included a bibliography. Very good study. In the DVD he shows what God wants for his people, and that Jesus wants us to love others regardless of differences.
If people don't want to go along with the Bible that is their choice, but changing it to go along with their lifestyles based on how they feel is just creating their own god. Chip is a good-spirited, loving and intelligent individual who definitely knows the Bible and speaks the truth in love.
This is an exceptional book! Definitely a must have for believers and non believers. Chip does an excellent job of clarifying the tough questions that we face daily. Non judgmental, a great read. This is a book that should not be left on the shelves, but carried along.
If you are looking for a stocking stuffer, Culture Shock is definitely one of my recommendations. It's content will capture the minds of the young and old, the single and married, pastor, and lay person, the seeker of truth and the closed minded. Culture Shock It tells the honest truth about sexuality, homosexuality, abortion, etc. This book encourages other Christians to neither remain silently on the sidelines or militant in their approach to these divisive issues.
Instead they are to compassionately "speak Nothing - Culture Shock (15) - Culture Shock (Vinyl) truth in Love" Ephesians to others so they can potentially receive God's best for their lives rather than settling for counterfeits lifestyles and thus escape the trap of the devil.
II Timothy I've bought several extras to give to This is an absolutely fantastic book. I've bought several extras to give to friends. It was used in a parenting Sunday School class but is really suitable for everyone.
