The production is state-of-the-art and sounds excellent, but at the same time it mostly lacks the distinctive fluid psychedelic sound that you find with all three of Jimi's studio albums -- Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love, and Electric Ladyland. You get some production experimentation with songs like the studio version of the "Star Spangled Banner," for example, but it's largely missing from the studio songs that were never worked up for inclusion on an album, like the version of "Spanish Castle Magic" included here, which sounds like an excellent live performance that just happened to be recorded in the studio, with none of the psychedelic production flourishes that appear on the Axis: Bold as Love verion.
Jimi became more and more involved with the mixing of his music from ''68, demonstrating he was Album) virtuoso psychedelic producer in addition to a wizard guitarist, culminating with Electric Ladyland, which was mixed in one all-night acid trip by Jimi, engineers Eddie Kramer and Gary Kellgren, and lots of LSD -- and it shows, especially the LSD, as Electric Ladyland is possibly the most psychedelic studio album of all time.
Unfortunately, without Jimi mixing these tracks, we miss out on his psychedelic production, although it's definitely there in his performance. The producers of this compilation still do a very fine job, conventionally speaking, but if you want true lysergic fluidity you really can't beat the original studio albums with Jimi and on the first two, Chas Chandler at the controls.
Perhaps one day some real trippers will mix Jimi's outtakes to give them the full acid-drenched psychedelic treatment they deserve, but that day has yet to come.
I've owned this boxed set on CD since it's original release and listened to so much, I know it by heart. If it came down to it, i would choose this over all the albums. It contains the best versions of many main releases along with jimi' s lesser known Little Wing - Michael Coppola - Monster Guitar (CD. Axis and little wing are out Album) this world. This vinyl is the way to go. If you like it on CD you'll love this. Top notch pressing Album) sound.
It's been said before and I totally agree; the definitive jimi Hendrix experience. That said, it took each song about 2 seconds to download into my computer. But to my 53 year old ears It has live recordings and alternate studio takes. The content is fascinating and top notch. I have the vinyl version of the box and the sound quality is terrific.
One person found this helpful. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. This is an excellently presented package with a nice-looking cover, booklet and photos and notes about the music. Unfortunately, the music itself does not live up to this presentation, though every other reviewer seems to think it is marvellous. You are given a selection of live tracks, which as a fan you probably already have, in many cases, and a variety of alternative versions of his well-known songs. These out-takes never made it to a record because simply they were not good enough.
Many of these alternative versions are not only second rate compared to the ones that made it through, but are often annoyingly self-indulgent at the same time. You do get two of his earliest recordings from the Olympia in Paris from Oct. This first disc, on the whole, does the legacy of Jimi no good at all, and would make the casual listener wonder why there was all that fuss about him.
Just under 64 mins playing time. Disc 2 it has to be said is a whole lot better than the previous one. So, not a promising start, but it does get better. While it can be argued that Jimi was the greatest, most inventive and influential guitarist that there has ever been, to be fair you cannot say that about his vocalisation.
Yes, he had a style and sound all of his own, but musically as a singer Van the Man had it over him. Overall playing time nearly 75 mins. If the dross were taken out of these two CDs and they were combined into one you would have a pretty good album, but unfortunately, they decided on quantity rather than quality. The standout tracks on this CD are of course the live ones, which you probably already have.
Playing time just over 73 mins. If the live tracks were taken away you could again easily combine these two last discs into one. In fact, the whole set would have been better if it had been compressed into one CD. Before you lash out any hard earned on this set, ask yourself one very pertinent question: If these studio tracks were not considered to be good enough to be issued while Jimi was alive why are we supposed to think that they are some sort of musical gems to-day?
I think I read somewhere that Rolling Stone magazine, called this the Rolls Royce of Hendrix sets - they're not wrong either!!! This set is absolutely superb in every way possible, to be honest I can't stop listening to it, whether it's on my tablet free download that came with the setor in my car. This is just the mutts ones, the best CD set I own out of any artist. I cannot recommend higher than this, if you need proof, then buy it, you will not be disappointed!!!!
It amazes how much music is in the Utterly Awesome. It amazes how much music is in the Hendrix vaults! I have for years been trying to get a copy of Gloria, used to have it as part of the vinyl singles box set released about So to now have Gloria means I can die a happy man!
Of the tracks that are new to me,i particularly love Cherokee Mist, this shows his genius. Keep 'em coming Janie Hendrix. My first real listen to Jimi Hendrix and j was not disappointed, lovely sound quality with many tracks I had never heard before which ably demonstrate his versatility from Blues standards to original compositions.

All the material on this one, live and studio is outstanding. Especially, 'Change is Gonna Come'. I heard most of this set, live, in April here in Austin and it was incredible.
Highly Recommended. Great new cd from a legendary guitar player. Great to hear Jeff's playing in the context of these mostly vocal tracks, with some instrumental numbers thrown in as well. Band is great, and Jeff's playing is at his best. Jeff Beck has been THE god in my guitar pantheon for over 40 years. I'm grateful to the universe that he's still playing today. I have all of his live albums, and no matter how many times I've heard his songs he manages to infuse each performance with new nuance and sonic surprise.
This album is a bit different because Beck has signed on a second guitarist while forgoing a keyboard player. Also, if you haven't heard Rhonda Smith yet, she is a master, funk monster bassist. I can take or leave the vocalist, who is certainly competent and enthusiastic, but whose voice is too white, if that makes any sense. The song set is more expansive than his other recent live albums', and I especially like "Danny Boy," of which he plays a beautiful, liquid version.
The second studio cut is a very interesting, and serious, Little Wing - Michael Coppola - Monster Guitar (CD song that intimates yet more interesting music to come. Good Beck. He is one of the best. I saw Jeff Beck in Atlanta last year, and this live album is just fabulous. It's a great reminder of the concert, and one of the best guitarist of all time.
Well-recorded live performances, plus two new studio tracks. Hoping for a full studio recording sometime in - been waiting since Emotion and Commotion in ! Jeff Beck continues to cover a wide range of musical styles with the control and taste of the master he is. Fans should share this and introduce friends to this living legend.
