Verified Purchase. I thought this Gamester - John Roos* - Memories Of The Manor (Vinyl recording was just amazing. I had this on cassette tape, but wanted it on CD, and it is one of the best live performances I have ever heard. Mike Tarrani Top Contributor: Drums. Monk ranks among my top three pianists, so I had to have this loving tribute and it truly is. Actually, only the first four tracks are Monk compositions.
The other three are Django, Gamester - John Roos* - Memories Of The Manor (Vinyl, which was composed my pianist John Lewis with whom Jackson spent most of his career in the Modern Jazz QuartetThink Positive, which Jackson composed and Blues For Groundhog, which is a ray brown composition.
Since there are no sound samples at the time of this review I will cite my favorite track: 'Round Midnight, which is mainly Ray Brown playing the melody on bowed bass and Monty Alexander tastefully comping behind him on piano. It's probably one of the most beautiful renditions I have ever heard. Or, perhaps, it just touched me in a special way.
Regardless, the entire album is one musical surprise after the other, and most of it is at bright tempos where the entire ensemble shines. Jackson is truly a master on vibraphone, but so are the others in their respective instruments. I was surprised by the restraint Alexander displayed because his style is given to 'excursions' and quoting within melodies. Here is sticks to the arrangements. That is not to say he was subdued in any way - that is not in his nature. Ray Brown and Mickey Roker were perfect for rounding out the rhythm section.
Among them, this is probably my favorite LP) the quartet was on fire. One person found this helpful. While this album might not be considered on par with Jackson's earlier work with the Modern Jazz Quartet, that doesn't mean LP) it's not worth picking up. Monk's music is very demanding, but Jackson a former Monk sideman and is his band are more than up to the task, and their fresh and spontaneous readings of Monk's compositions are definitely the highlights of this disc.
Ray Brown's brilliant bowed solo take with tasteful accompaniment by Monty Alexander on "Round Midnight" is the hands-down highlight. His slow, emotional rendering of this tune is a revelation. The band also shines on a slower rendition of "Blue Monk", and displays uncanny rhythmic confidence with "Straight, No Chaser".
Their joyful version "In Walked Bud" is also great fun. Unfortunately, the rest of the material on this disc is not quite on par with the Monk tunes.
While the version of "Django" on this disc is quite respectable, it lacks freshness and spontaneity - not surprising considering that Jackson had probably played this tune thousands of times at the time of this recording.
Nevertheless, these three songs do seem to provide a good representation of Jackson's live set during this era. If you're a Monk fan and you should be! The sound quality is truly excellent for a live club recording, and Jackson and his band are on top of their game - even if they're a little bit too on top of it at times. See all reviews.

You won't be sorry you bought it. I bought this album on a cassette tape back when it first came out inand I was so happy to find it on a CD! My favorite album of all. I really enjoyed this collaboration with Roy Rogers. Roy always seemed so appreciative of his audience who made him famous. Cannot say enough how unbelievable this whole production is. What a voice still. He sings, yodels and talks these songs. This is my 2nd cd. Was new and good condition when got it.
